Indiana Coalition for Public Education’s second annual School Funding Survey reveals the escalating crisis facing public schools across the state.

Of the state’s 290 traditional public school corporations, 49.7% participated in the survey. Nearly all are facing negative impacts from last year’s Senate Enrolled Act 1 (SEA 1), with only a handful of small, rural schools expecting to be unaffected.

In response to budget shortfalls, half of school corporations have already reduced support staff, with 45.8% eliminating teaching staff. Over 90% are at least considering reductions to both. Nearly half have already reduced planned wage increases for staff or committed to doing so. Significant percentages have also postponed building maintenance, reduced transportation, and trimmed services provided to students and their families.

Survey responses paint a bleak picture of the foreseeable future. After decades of funding failing to keep pace with expenses, many corporations are experiencing an existential crisis thanks to the combination of SEA 1 and rapid growth in costs related to utilities, insurance, transportation, safety and IT infrastructure.
