🚨Urgent Legislative Alert: HB 1002 – Deregulation gone too far

by | Apr 17, 2025 | 2025 Legislative Session, Charter Schools, Indiana Legislature, Legislative Alerts - 2025, SEL

Speak up for our kids and public education. Keep calling.

House Bill 1002 is going to the conference committee on Monday 4/21 at 9:00am. HB 1002 is a deregulation bill that goes too far. Please write your emails and make calls on this bill before it’s too late.

Do not eliminate all qualifications for the Secretary of Education position. This leader should have a deep understanding of education and be a professional in the field.

Do not remove the statement of economic interest for charter school board members which is submitted before a charter is approved for authorization.  If charter schools are going to take public funds (and they will soon access local property taxes courtesy Senate Bill 1), they must play by the same rules.

Do not remove the requirement that teachers be trained in the way students learn and how to teach them to control their emotions and behavior. Kids don’t learn in a vacuum. With so many schools reporting student behavior issues, why would we remove this kind of help for teachers and students? Keep the tools in their toolbox. Watch Sen. Ron Alting (R) speak passionately on this on the Senate floor here.
