The event, “Indiana K-12 Education: An Overview for Statehouse Candidates,” will provide an objective overview of Indiana’s education system, school funding, and the major issues expected to dominate the 2027 legislative session.

As education policy continues to shape communities across Indiana, ICPE’s briefing will help candidates better understand how public education is funded, the different types of schools operating in Indiana, common misconceptions surrounding school choice, and the financial challenges facing school districts.

“Candidates are being asked to make decisions that will affect nearly one million Indiana students,” said Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer, President of the Indiana Coalition for Public Education. “Whether someone has a background in education or not, it’s essential they understand how Indiana’s K-12 system works, what challenges schools are facing, and the long-term consequences of legislative decisions.”

The presentation will include:

• An overview of Indiana’s K-12 education system and school governance
• How public schools are funded—and why many districts are facing growing financial pressures
• Data addressing common misconceptions about vouchers and charter schools
• Findings from ICPE’s statewide survey of public school superintendents
• Major education issues likely to be considered during the 2027 legislative session, including school funding, local control, and continued voucher expansion
• Practical campaign messaging grounded in public education policy

The session is intended to be informational rather than political and is open to candidates of all parties. ICPE’s mission is to ensure that all Indiana children have access to high-quality, equitable, well-funded public schools governed by their local communities.

“There is no expectation that candidates agree with every position ICPE takes,” Fuentes-Rohwer added. “Our goal is to provide reliable information so future legislators can make informed decisions on behalf of Indiana’s students and taxpayers.”
