Dear Friends,

Bad bills continue to move through the legislature this week that seriously threaten our public schools.

  • The last day for Third Reading on bills is Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
  • Conference committees begin on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
  • Anticipated sine die is April 24, 2025. Session must end by April 29, 2025.

You can see the bills the governor is signing here.

Below you will find the bills shown in the graphic that are still moving through the process this week.

Here’s what you can do:

Call legislators, senate and house leadership and the governor. We must continue to speak up to protect our public schools from harmful policies and keep the focus where it belongs: on kids.

SB 289 – Oppose. SB 289 creates a culture of fear and suspicion in schools and other agencies. It could lead to costly civil suits and alarming penalties of $50kand $100k. Students need to learn the truth in history, both good and bad.

  • Third Reading – House

SB 1 – Oppose. SB1 will lower property taxes in exchange for potentially increasing local income taxes and allowing municipalities to collect income tax. It shifts a tax burden tied to charter schools from the state to property taxes. Dissolves a rural school district for no reason. Could yours be next?

  • Concurrence – Senate Floor
  • Contact your local senator, Sen Bray and Gov Braun

SB 287 – Oppose. SB 287 is the partisan school boards bill. Politics do not belong in public education. The bill would prohibit some potential candidates from running for election due to the Hatch Act.

  • Time & Date TBD
  • Conference Committee

HB 1002 – Oppose. 1002 is a charter school deregulation bill. It also deregulated qualifications for the secretary of education who will no longer need a degree or to live in state. Removes the requirement that teachers be trained in social emotional learning, cultural competency, and trauma-informed care.

HB 1515 – Oppose. New public schools go through many hurdles with building and zoning, but this bill gives a charter school carte blanche to get established with blatant disregard for local control or input over zoning.

  • Third Reading – Senate Floor

SB 373 – Oppose. Creates duplicative services by taking control of facilities and transportation away from public schools. Hoosier communities do not need more bureaucracy and red tape nor taxation without representation.

  • Second Reading – House

HB 1001 – Support in part. Currently the bill will not allow universal vouchers to happen as that is fiscally irresponsible. This is good. This allows more funding to go towards traditional public schools, getting us closer to a true 2% increase in the total public school budget for 2026 and 2027. This is closer to the 3% increase we have asked for.
