Dear Friends,
There are urgent bills moving through the legislature this week that threaten our public schools. Here are just a few happening this week that need your attention. It’s time to stand up for the teachers, students, and communities that rely on strong, equitable public schools.
Here’s what you can do:
- Call or email legislators.
- Share this post with your network.
- Talk about this with friends, family and neighbors.

(800) 382-9841 – House Republicans
Senate: (317) 232-9400 or (800) 382-9467
Monday 4/7/25 – 9:30am – House Judiciary Committee
- SB 289. Oppose. This creates a culture of fear and suspicion in schools and other agencies. It could lead to costly civil suits and penalties. Students need to learn the truth in history, both good and bad. Contact committee members & your legislators.

Monday 4/7/25 – 10:30am – House Ways & Means Committee
- SB 1. Oppose. SB 1 offers no solid replacement for the property tax cuts proposed. We must replace not erase. It also introduces a potential property tax increase by requiring public schools to share property tax dollars with charter schools. This is a shift of tax burden from the state to property tax payers. Contact committee members & your legislators.

Monday 4/7/25 – 1:30pm – Senate Session
- SB 287 (Senate Concurrence Vote). Oppose. This is the partisan school boards bill. Politics do not belong in public education. The bill would prohibit some potential candidates from running for election due to the Hatch Act. Contact your senator.
- HB 1002 (Second Reading). Support the amendment that will keep behavioral and emotional training, teaching, and evaluations which is currently struck in this bill. Contact your senator.
Wednesday 4/9/25 – 8:30am – House Education Committee
- SB 373. Oppose amendments 9 & 13. There is no evidence or fiscal analysis to indicate that this additional taxing authority would save any money. These are duplicative services that will blur the lines of local governance. Hoosier communities do not need more bureaucracy and red tape nor taxation without representation. Contact the committee members and your legislators.

Thursday 4/10/25 – 9:30am Senate Appropriations Committee
- HB 1001. Oppose. Legislators must create a budget increase of no less than 3% in both 2026 and 2027, for our traditional public schools, the only type of school that is constitutionally required to be funded. Expanding the Indiana Choice voucher and the virtual charter programs right now is fiscally irresponsible. Cut those expansion efforts from the bill.
