We are joining together with other organizations and advocates to remind our legislators that we are determined in our commitment to Keep Indiana Education Public. Public schools are where we come together and learn to appreciate and respect our differences. Public schools are where children learn to be responsible citizens and informed voters, and where children of every background, every language, every nationality, every religion, every ability and all incomes are welcome. Now more than ever in these divisive times, our communities need our public schools.

We know that going to the Statehouse is a big ask, but your time and presence MATTER. This legislative session has been off to a fast and scary start for public schools. As we always say: bills and budgets reflect priorities. We are deeply concerned about many bills that are an existential threat to public schools and/or will mean less funding and more privatization.

There are bills in the legislature that would force public school districts to dissolve and become charter schools, to share property tax dollars with charters, and take facilities and transportation away from a school district’s control. There are bills that would see drastic cuts or caps in property taxes that would destroy the operating budgets of numerous school districts. Meanwhile, they plan to eliminate the income limits on private school vouchers entirely. Who is being prioritized?

We will have a wonderful lineup of speakers including teachers, parents, and community leaders about the fight for public schools and what our kids need. We are excited to stand united and hear from these friends of public education:

Check back for our confirmed speakers list.

When we look at the massive amount of our public tax dollars that are being diverted away from public schools into private hands with no guardrails, we ask why parents must do fundraising like holding bake sales for essential materials and programs for our students? How many cookies must we bake and at what price must we sell them in order to fill these funding gaps? Find out at our mock “Indiana’s Five Billion Dollar Bake Sale!” We will have 200 cookies made by local area public school culinary arts students which will be priced at $25 million each to help illustrate the $5 billion in funding that Indiana public schools have lost due to harmful education privatization policies.

What is the “action?”

✅ Make an appointment with your legislator in advance. We don’t have the capacity to make these appointments for you, but if you need help, here’s how. If you can’t get an appointment, you might be able to see them in the lobby or even at our event. Also, we will have a postcard and letter writing station so you can write them a message and hand deliver it or we can deliver for you. Ask your friends to join you!

✅ Review our helpful information for going to the Statehouse.

✅ Read our legislative alerts and articles on our blog. We will also have key bill talking points at the event.

✅ Share on social media and tell friends and neighbors about the event!

We must come together for our public schools, for our students and for our democracy so we can Keep Indiana Education Public!

See you at the Statehouse!
